Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) originated in China over 2000 years ago and mainly consists of acupuncture and herbal medicine. TCM theory is rooted in the Taoist concept of Yin and Yang, with a holistic approach to diagnosis, treatment and health maintenance. TCM is still used today to treat a wide range of conditions, taking into account the effects of diet, lifestyle and the emotions, and any imbalances they may have caused.

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles in specific points on the body in order to improve the circulation, removing any blockages of energy (Qi) which may be causing pain or health problems, and stimulating the body's natural healing response. Needles are usually retained for 20-25 minutes.

Chinese herbal medicine can be taken in tea or capsule form and is often suitable for chronic, complex conditions, alongside acupuncture treatment. Different herbs have unique properties which are used to rebalance the internal system and promote a favourable environment for the body to function normally. For example, cooling herbs would normally be prescribed for patients with Heat conditions (excess Yang/Yin deficiency), and warming herbs can help those with Cold conditions (excess Yin/deficient Yang). Nutrition and lifestyle advice may also be given to get the best out of the prescribed formula.
